What is a PC Registry Anyway?

The PC Registry is a database or catalog that stores all the settings and options for the Microsoft Windows operating system. The files in this catalog contain information about almost everything you do with your computer from visiting websites to the programs you have installed and use – including how often you use them. When it was first introduced with Windows 3.1, the purpose of the registry was to tidy up all of the files that had previously been used to store Windows settings. Now, when you start to open a program, your computer asks the registry to find where the program is stored and start it up. Only computers running Windows operating systems have a registry.

The registry has hundreds of thousands of entries and new entries are created every time you do something. As it fills with information you may notice your computer slows down. One reason this happens is that Windows almost never removes registry entries, even if a program is uninstalled. Most uninstallers can’t remove their own registry keys. As files are moved and programs are uninstalled, some registry keys point to programs or files that no longer exist or are located somewhere else. This situation further slows your PC and can cause errors that affect performance.

Only people with an expert knowledge of computer programming should try to change the actual registry. If you make a mistake, you can lose the information you need to make it work at all. Not our goal here! Registry cleaners were created to help us fix problems ourselves without the risk. Using a quality registry cleaner often can give you better performance, decreased boot time and fewer errors. For sure, cleaning out some of the gunk in your system can only help.

RegDefense in Action

Most questions about Registry Cleaners have to do with their effectiveness and safety. I’ve made a short video to show you how easy it is to clean registry errors and how safe RegDefense is to run. Click here to view the video.

What is a DLL?

You may come across the term DLL when reading about computer problems. So what is it? DLL stands for “dynamic link library.” For computers that run a Windows operating system, much of the way it functions is provided by DLL files. In addition to the overall operating system, programs you run also use DLLs to work and some of them share the same files. For example, there is a DLL that performs common dialog box related functions. Each program you run can use that file to get the Open dialog box. This helps provide efficient computer memory usage.

Here is a list of some of the most common files that you may have seen while using your computer:

• ActiveX Controls files. One example of an ActiveX control is the function that lets you select a date from a calendar.

• Control Panel files. These files are found in the Control Panel. Each option you see has a specialized DLL.

• Device driver files. A common device driver is the printer driver that controls printing.

There are some definite advantages to using DLLs. When more than one program uses the same DLL, physical memory is saved. This can influence the speed of your computer. DLLs also allow very large programs to operate more efficiently. If updates or fixes are needed within the operating system, having shared DLLs helps the update go more easily.

But there are some disadvantages as well. When a program needs to use a DLL file, a dependency is created. The program is no longer self-contained and can have problems if the dependency is broken. For example, the program may stop running if a dependent DLL is upgraded, fixed, overwritten or removed from the computer. In this case you may get a DLL error message.

So this is where a good registry cleaner like RegDefense comes in. The software does registry fixes which include managing shared DLLs, validating ActiveX files, and fixing many other problems.

To learn more about DLL files, get The Microsoft Computer Dictionary.

If you know you are experiencing DLL errors, download registry cleaner RegDefense and get them fixed.

Questions about Registry Cleaners

Where do registry errors come from?
Broken registry links come from uninstalling programs and your antivirus software removing viruses. The process of removal leaves traces of the program in the registry which slow your computer down. They then need to be removed by a registry cleaner. The registry should be cleaned at least every six months or so to keep your PC running its best.

If registry cleaners are safe then why do they have a registry backup program built in?
There is always a risk involved whenever you do something with your PC’s operations. Even the best computer programs have a backup function as a safety net. Often they are there to give you confidence that you won’t harm your computer or lose valuable files. If anything goes wrong, you don’t have to panic.

Should I edit my computer’s Registry manually?
It’s risky unless you really know what you’re doing. It is a daunting task to do registry repairs because there are so many complex entries stored in your system. It can be hard to tell what is vital to your system. Most experienced technicians tend to stay away from the registry unless there are no other options to resolve  a major computer problem. As a result, utilities like RegDefense were created to do the work for you.

What types of errors will the cleaner fix?
By default, registry cleaners scan for all types of errors including shared DLL errors, missing fonts, invalid startup entries, invalid keys, old and outdated files to mention a few.

Now that you see how important the registry is to your computer, run a free scan and see what kind of shape your PC is in.

Internet Explorer Goes Wonky

Has this ever happened to you? I was trying to look up directions on MapQuest and all of a sudden IE went crazy! It started spontaneously opening new tabs and I couldn’t do anything about it. I don’t think it had anything to do with MapQuest because in the past it’s happened on other websites. It got to the point that the program wouldn’t close even if I used the File Manager. After several frustrating minutes of trying to get it to stop, I finally had to manually shut down the computer. Luckily I didn’t have anything else open that needed to be saved.

I booted back up and before trying again I ran my registry cleaner. Registry Easy has specific tools to clean Internet Explorer, but I have RegDefense on my system right now. It found several issues, fixed them and now I’m OK again. Got my directions with no more IE problems. I’ll just have to remember to run the cleaner more often in the future. It doesn’t happen all that often but what a mess when it does.

Fix a Slow Computer the Easy Way

Fix a Slow Computer the Easy Way

Is your computer running slower and slower every day? Are you wondering what happened to that brand new computer you bought that was running so fast when you first set it up? Want to get it back where it was? It’s not that hard to get it running better. Following a few easy steps will do it.
#1. Reduce the number of programs that startup when you start your computer. When you install a  new program it automatically goes into the startup commands. And many times they run in the background without us knowing, eating up speed. Removing the registry entries that allow those programs to activate at startup will speed up both you computer start time and overall performance.

#2. Run a disk defragmenter. Running it on a regular basis will speed up access to different files and programs. You should see an increase in speed when you browse the internet. Microsoft recommends you run a disk defragmenter once a month.

#3. Run a registry cleaner. This is probably the most important thing you can do to make your computer run faster. When people ask “why is my computer so slow” the question I’d ask is when was the last time you cleaned up your computer’s registry? Do you even know your computer has a registry that gets clogged and corrupted? Don’t feel bad if you don’t know much about it, that’s why you’re here! To fix a slow computer you just need to make sure that the registry is optimized.

Luckily there are a programs that can perform all these three tasks for you without you having expert computer knowledge. After I used the program, I noticed a definite difference in the speed of my computer. You don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars on new equipment, upgrades or a geek to come and do it for you. You can fix a slow computer yourself, the easy way!
